Reasons not to deploy RED Martin May , Jean Bolot , Christophe Diot , and Bryan Lyles INRIA SPRINT Labs mmay,[email protected] cdiot,[email protected] Abstract In this paper we question the bene ts of RED by using a testbed made of two CISCO 7500 routers and up to 16 PCs to observe RED performance under a tra c load made of FTP transfers, together with HTTP tra c and non responsive UDP ows. The main results we found were, rst, that RED with small bu ers does not improve signi cantly the performance of the network, in particular the overall throughput is smaller than with Tail Drop and the di erence in delay is not signi cant. Second, parameter tuning in RED remains an inexact science, but has no big impact on the end-to-end performance. We argue that RED deployment is not straight forward, and we strongly recommend more research with realistic network settings to develop a full quantitative understanding of RED. Nevertheless, RED allows us to control the queue size with large bu ers.

Stability Assessment Metamorphic Approach (SAMA) for Effective Scheduling based on Fault Tolerance in Computational Grid
Grid Computing allows coordinated and controlled resource sharing and problem solving in multi-institutional, dynamic virtual organizations. Moreover, fault tolerance and task scheduling is an important issue for large scale computational grid because of its unreliable nature of grid resources. Commonly exploited techniques to realize fault tolerance is periodic Checkpointing that periodically ...
متن کاملComparison of Multihop Routing Protocols Based on Packet Interval Time in Wireless Sensor Networks
In this paper, comparative analysis of changing the packet interval time on the energy consumption, throughput of the proposed multihop routing protocol and Assisted LEACH protocol is analyzed. Simulation substantiate that varied causes throughput to change alternately and energy consumed is constant for both the protocols. KeywordsAssisted LEACH, multihop routing, packet interval, energy consu...

GUPTE, RUCHIR. Interval Arithmetic Logic Unit for DSP and Control Applications. (Under the direction of Prof. William W. Edmonson). There are many applications in the field of digital signal processing (DSP) and controls that require the user to know how various numerical errors (uncertainty) affect the result. Interval Arithmetic (IA) eliminates this uncertainty by replacing non-interval value...
متن کاملFairness and Throughput Enhancement-based Random Access Using Fuzzy Controlled Backoff Interval
The main challenge in designing a good random access schemes is how to maximize the channel throughput while improves the fairness of random access channels. In this paper, we propose a new backoff algorithm to improve the fairness of random access channels while achieves high channel throughput. A novel feature of the proposed backoff algorithm is that every node modifies its backoff interval ...
متن کاملThroughput Improvement of STS-Based MC DS-CDMA System with Variable Spreading Factor
The throughput enhancement of Space-Time Spreading (STS)-based Multicarrier Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (MC DS-CDMA) system is investigated in this paper. Variable Spreading Factor (VSF) is utilized to improve the data throughput of the system. In this contribution, an analytical approach is proposed to compute a new expression for the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of t...
متن کاملDownlink Throughput Driven Channel Access Framework for Cognitive LTE Femto-Cells
This paper proposes an optimized sensing based channel access framework for the LTE cognitive femto-cells, with an objective of maximizing the femto-cells downlink throughput. Cognitive femto-cells opportunistically transmit on the macro-cell channels when they are free of use. Those free channels are located by means of spectrum sensing using energy detection. Moreover, periodic sensing is ado...
